Wine Wednesday: New Year's Eve Champagne Punch

wine wednesday sangria

The countdown to New Year's is on and we are getting into the spirit(s) a little early at the Benjamin house. In the spirit of Wine Wednesday, Ross and I have tirelessly and tipsily tested and perfected these Champagne Punch recipes to leave you weak at the knees (no New Year's kiss required).

Sparkling New Year's Eve Champagne Punch(~16 servings, 100 calories per serving)

  • 1 750 mL Champagne, chilled
  • 1 750 mL White Wine (I like a blend of pinot grigio and moscato to balance the sweet berries and sorbet. Looking for sweeter? Try all moscato.)
  • 1/2 Lemon, sliced (for lighter lemon flavor, substitute 1 tsp lemon juice)
  • 1 Package Frozen Strawberries, for garnish
  • Raspberry Sorbet

There are two ways to make this recipe - by the glass or by the pitcher. Both are convenient depending on your New Year's plans. This is definately a drink to swirl a sip. The more the sorbet melts, the sweeter and fruitier the punch becomes!

By The Glass:
Short on fridge space? Staying in on New Years and looking to make a smaller batch of this sangria? I hear you! For small batch of punch, mix wine, lemon slices and frozen strawberries in a resealable, airtight container. I received 2 of these glass carafes as bridal shower gifts, they keep my punch base fresh for a few days at minimal investment (especially with a 20% coupon!). They are also great for storing any leftovers from your pitcher (in the rare event that ever happens). When ready to serve, pour 3 oz. punch base and 3 oz. champagne into a glass. Garnish individual glasses with wine soaked fruits and small golf-ball size scoop of sorbet. I use the OXO Small Cookie Scoop - its the perfect size. And "Cheers"!

By The Pitcher:
Slice the lemon. Place into a pitcher or large beverage dispenser. Pour wine (not champagne) over lemon slices and frozen strawberries. Stir together. Refrigerate for one hour. When ready to serve, pour champagne into pitcher and give one final stir. Garnish each glass with wine infused fruit and a small scoop of sorbet to keep chilled. (See note above for my tip about scooping perfect golf-ball scoops of sorbet.)

Bottoms up!

Are you a red wine kind of gal? Don't worry we didn't forget about you! I was lucky enough to stumble upon some Cupcake Sparkling Red Wine on my most recent trip to the store. A belated Christmas miracle for all!

New Year's Eve Sparkling Red Wine Punch(~16 servings, 100 calories per serving)

  • 1 750 mL Sparkling Red Wine, chilled
  • 1 750 mL Red Table Wine (I like Rex Goliath Free Range Red - not too sweet, not too dry, a great crowd pleaser)
  • 1 Orange, sliced
  • 1 Package Frozen Strawberries, for garnish
  • Raspberry Sorbet

Just like the Sparkling Champagne Punch, there are two ways to make this recipe - by the glass or by the pitcher. This is definately a drink to swirl a sip. The more the sorbet melts, the sweeter and fruitier the punch becomes!

By The Glass:
For small batch of punch, mix still wine only, orange slices and frozen strawberries in a resealable, airtight container. When ready to serve, pour 3 oz. punch base and 3 oz. sparkling wine into a glass. Garnish individual glasses with wine soaked fruits and small golf-ball size scoop of sorbet. Cheers!

By The Pitcher:
Slice the orange. Place into a pitcher or large beverage dispenser. Pour still wine only (not sparkling wine) over orange slices and frozen strawberries. Stir together. Refrigerate for one hour. When ready to serve, pour sparkling wine into pitcher and give one final stir. Garnish each glass with wine infused fruit and a small scoop of sorbet to keep chilled.

Need a beverage to serve to your under 21 crowd? Try my Kid Friendly New Year's Eve Punch. This drink features similar fruits and garnishes to keep the kiddies feeling like grown ups.

Kid Friendly New Year's Eve Punch
  • 64 oz. Juicy Juice Fruit Punch (or similar)
  • 1 Orange, sliced
  • 2 C Pineapple Cubed (substitute canned pineapple if out of season)
  • 1 L Lemon Lime Soda, chilled
  • 1 Package Frozen Strawberries, for garnish
  • Raspberry Sorbet
Slice, dice and cube the pineapple and orange. Place into your kid-friendly pitcher. Pour in the Juicy Juice and frozen strawberries. Refrigerate for one hour hours to let the fruit infuse it's flavor into the juice (If using canned pineapple, mix in some of the juices for an extra punch of flavor). When you're ready to serve, pour in the soda and stir one last time. Serve over ice. Garnish with fruit from the pitcher and a small scoop of sorbet to keep chilled.
