Starbuck's Hack: Chai Tea Latte

This morning it was a whopping 1° when I got out of bed. It has now warmed to a balmy 17°. On days like today, sometimes the only thing to take the chill out of your bones and warm your soul is a nice hot latte, but who likes braving the cold to hit their local coffee shop? Here's a budget-friendly, homemade version of one of my Starbucks favorites that doesn't skimp on flavor.

Starbuck's Hack: Abby's Cozy Chai Tea Latte

Prep Time , serves 1.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Measure 12 oz. of milk. Pour into microwave safe mug.
  2. Measure 4 oz. chai tea concentrate. Pour into mug with milk.
  3. Microwave milk and chai tea concentrate for 2 minutes (time may vary depending on your microwave).
  4. Enjoy!

I love chai lattes during this time of year. Something about the fall and winter just screams cinnamon to me. I enjoy curling up under the covers with a chai latte before bed on a cold winter night or grabbing my Nook and a blanket and spending my Saturday reading while sipping lattes. (A cup of my Cozy Chai Latte did the trick to warm me back up after a necessary run for groceries during this Saturday's snow.) If you're anything like me, choking down a plain glass of milk is quite the feat. Adding some chai is a great way to snag over 50% of your daily recommended calcium intake.

Are you a fan of dirty chai lattes? Not to worry. Simply add a shot of espresso to the ingredient list above or swap out the Celestial Seasonings Mountain Chai Tea Latte Concentrate for their Dirty Chai Tea Latte Concentrate, which already has espresso mixed in for you. I prefer to stock to the Mountain Chai at home since it is more versatile.

Let's Compare the Price!

Milk -     64 oz Chai -  32 oz. Total # Drinks Cost Per Drink
Starbucks Grande Chai Tea Latte) N/A N/A 1 $4.44
Abby's Cozy Chai Tea Latte $3.69 $3.21 6 $1.15

The ingredients purchased for Abby's Cozy Chai Tea Latte yield enough for 6 drinks with a total investment of $6.90. This comes out to $1.15. Compare this to the cost of a Starbucks Grande Chai Tea Latte and you just saved 75% and the effort of getting out of your pajamas and driving to the nearest Starbucks. An added bonus: following this recipe even leaves you with 2 portions of chai concentrate to go towards your next gallon of milk.

Are you really looking to cut the cost of this recipe? Check out buying Celestial Seasonings Mountain Chai Tea Latte Concentrate in bulk through Amazon. I purchase 6 boxes at a time for only $20 through Amazon's Subscribe and Save program. Subscribe and Save is a scheduled monthly delivery service through Amazon. This means that every month that I order chai concentrate, I save 5% off the retail price. If I'm ordering chai with 4 or more other items, I receive 15% off the retail price on my whole shipment. Buying direct through Celestial Seasonings for the same product runs $31.50 plus tax ($5.25 per box). This still provides savings from Starbucks, but not as substantial.
